POUND RIDGE, N.Y. Summer may still be a couple of months away, but the Pound Ridge Recreation Department has opened its registration for town summer camps, which will feature a host of activities from which kids can choose.
Rec Director David Goldberg said his department will once again be offering two camps this season: the Day Camp and the Teen Travel Camp.
The Day Camp is for kids in grades K through seven and is held at the town park, Goldberg said. The fee for grades one through seven is $450 for the six-week program and is $550 for the kindergarteners because we need more counselors for that one.
Goldberg noted that after May 15, the fees increase by $100.
The Day Camp keeps the kids busy. Every Tuesday, Goldberg said, will feature some sort of entertainment, including face painting, balloon artists and magicians. Wednesdays will feature foods such as pizza and hot dogs. Friday is trip day, with excursions to places like the Brewster Rink for ice skating and to Lake Compounce a water amusement park in Bristol, Conn. There will be five trips altogether and will cost an additional $40 each.
Within the Day Camp, the town will also offer specialty camps that range from theater arts and dance to tennis, baseball and swimming. Fees for specialty camps range from $50 to $75. The specialty camps are also open to children within the Bedford School District who are not part of the Pound Ridge Day Camp. Fees for non-campers range from $75 to $100.
Goldberg said that the Day Camp is exceedingly popular.
We get about 300 kids each year, but weve never had to turn anyone away, he said.
This summer will also mark the second year for the towns Teen Travel Camp a program that runs for six weeks for kids 12 to 15 years old. As the name implies, each session features a trip to a nearby fun destination. Each week there are three trips for a total of 18 excursions to places such as Medieval Times in Lyndhurst, N.J., Six Flags in Agawam, Mass. and Island Current fishing charter in City Island, N.Y.
Last year was the first year we did this and we had 34 kids sign up, Goldberg said.
The cost for Teen Travel Camp for those who sign up by May 15 is $1,200, which includes all 18 trips though campers can go on as many or as few as they wish. After May 15, the fee jumps to $1,300.
Goldberg noted that there is no online registration; however, the forms are available at towns website at www.townofpoundridge.com/recreation. Residents can print them and then fill them out and bring them to the town house. State law also requires that all campers submit a medical report. Those forms are also available at the website. Parents can print them out and bring them to their family doctor. In lieu of that form, parents can submit the paperwork from their childs school physical, which includes immunization information.
Both camps run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, although Goldberg said that the Teen Travel Camp may last a little longer on days when the destinations are a little further away.
