You can supply a shopping list to a Neighbor To Neighbor (N2N) volunteer, who will pick up and deliver the groceries. Another option is to take the N2N van to the Scotts Corner Market on Wednesdays and peruse the shelves in person. Wednesday is the day the market offers a 10 percent discount to seniors.
Now seniors have a comfortable spot to sit and chat (or not) as they wait for the bus to return them home. N2N has provided a bench, set under the eave on the New Canaan side of the market complex.
“We used to have just a couple of shoppers taking the N2N bus on Wednesdays, but in the last year, the number has gone up to 10,” explained Louise Paolicelli of the Pound Ridge Recreation Department’s Senior Programs and Services. “They used to have to stand around and wait for the bus ride home, then someone suggested a bench.
“Everyone takes a different amount of time to shop,” she continued, “so this is a lot more comfortable. The bus driver could take them home individually, but that’s very time consuming and just adds to the wait.”
N2N provides a number of other special services for seniors. The Meals on Wheels program delivers hot food on a temporary basis to residents who are medically homebound or unable to prepare their own meals.
Volunteer drivers will drive you to and from doctors’ appointments. Various medical equipment, such as walkers, wheel chairs and canes are available on loan, and a computerized telephone calling system for anyone who needs to be checked on a daily basis.
The Pound Ridge Police Benevolent Association sponsors a File of Life program, where medical and emergency information is stored. You can fill out the forms and leave the pouch in a convenient place in your home, such as the refrigerator door. Enrollment in the service is free.
