POUND RIDGE, N.Y. It only happens every two years, so you dont want to miss one of Pound Ridges most popular events when it kicks off Friday afternoon
The Pound Ridge Garden Clubs biennial Flower Show will be held Friday and Saturday at Conant Hall, and club members promise it will be something special.
Its an enormous undertaking, said Barbara Mayer, a member of the Garden Clubs publicity committee. There are a tremendous number of hours that go into it. Its such a demanding activity; thats why we hold it every other year. We are literally filling the building with horticultural specimens including flowers, herbs and vegetables.
The theme for this years show is If Only Every Day Were a Holiday; the show will feature artistically arranged flowers celebrating holidays throughout the year. Designs themed for Mothers Day, Valentines Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Columbus Day, Halloween and even the Chinese Lunar New Year will be featured.
Those entries will be for the design class, which has eight different categories, Mayer said. We also have horticulture classes that will have the herbs, annuals, vegetables, flowering plants and other categories of greenery. That part is kind of the like the 4-H Club.
The show will provide educational opportunities for attendees, including an exhibit on the use of roses for the holidays, as well as an exhibit by youngsters just beginning to learn the elements of floral design.
The club has been working with children to introduce them to the garden, Mayer said. And we will have members on hand to answer questions people might have.
The childrens exhibit will feature an underwater design evoking the Mardi Gras holiday.
The event will be judged by three national judges from outside the Pound Ridge Garden Club before the doors open, so that attendees will know who the ribbon winners are when they tour the exhibits.
Pound Ridge Garden Club members are renowned for the artistry of their designs, Mayer said. Past shows have garnered awards at both the regional and national levels.
Conant Hall is located at 257 Westchester Ave. (Route 137) in Pound Ridge. The show runs from 2:30 p.m.-5 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.
