POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- Scotts Corner Market, a longtime fixture in Pound Ridge, is planning a significant renovation that includes revamping its product lines.

Owner Billy Fortin told Daily Voice that the renovation work, which involves gutting the building, is anticipated to cost about $2.5 million – it could go higher, however – and could potentially start early next year.

Customers will see several changes following the work, according to Fortin. They include increasing the deli’s department by about three times in response to more demand for grab-and-go food services, along with adding booth seating so customers can eat at the market for lunch or dinner.

Scotts Corner Market will also feature more organic and local produce, according to Fortin, as it is partnering with local wholesaler Hudson Valley Harvest. The seafood selection, which comes from the Fulton Fish Market, will also be expanded, Fortin said, and a full-service prime butcher counter will be installed. In addition, Fortin plans to change the baked-goods section to emphasize scratch baking and to offer more cake-decorating services.

Fortin anticipates that the renovation will take about three months and be done in phases. The hours in which the work is planned are intended to minimize conflict with customers.

“The less we inconvenience our customers, the better,” Fortin said.

Fortin received a boost recently when the Westchester County Industrial Development Agency (IDA), approved a sales tax exemption. The exemption only applies to materials used for the renovation work, according to George Oros, who is chief of staff for County Executive Rob Astorino.

The market will remain within its current footprint, Fortin added, a space that is roughly 30,000 square feet.

For Fortin, the upcoming renovation is the latest big step in what has been a roughly four-decade journey at the market. He began working at the store as a produce clerk in 1975, moved up in the market’s ranks and acquired an ownership stake in the business in 1989. Fortin has been the market’s sole owner since 2007.

Scotts Corner Market is located in the Trinity Corners Shopping Center, which is off of Westchester Avenue. The shopping center itself could change ownership; Fortin said that the property is in contract for sale to a group of local investors, who he called a “great group of guys who are very talented.”
