PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – Port Chester High School science teacher Alexander Miller was selected for a Greater New York Wipro Science Education Fellowship at Mercy College.

Miller was one of 20 teachers selected for their support of science learning for all students through research-based strategies, and lesson study and collaboration. The fellowship is a two-year fellowship that focuses on leadership in science education. The goal of the fellowship program is to keep good teachers in the classroom, developing their leadership skills within their districts instead of pulling them out of the classroom for administrative roles.

In year one, Miller and his fellow participants will focus on vertical and horizontal articulation across districts and lesson observation and study. In year two, each fellow will lead professional development in their own district and work on a district-wide initiative of his or her choosing. The program has met success in its implementation in Massachusetts and New Jersey.

Amanda Gunning and Meghan Marrero of the Mercy College School of Education were awarded a $1.19 million grant to lead the Greater New York Wipro Science Education Fellowship after beating out local competition for this prestigious, privately funded grant.

Wipro is an international information technology company that is based in India and serves more than 61 countries. Because of its extensive work in the U.S., Wipro funds varied science education innovation projects here.
