Port Chester Group Against Common Core Standards Holds Forum

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- An advocacy group calling itself "STOP Common Core in New York State" will hold a half-day forum at the Renaissance Westchester Hotel in West Harrison on Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. "to inform, equip and empower parents regarding the 'real facts' of the newly implemented educational mandate," according to a news release.

The group, consisting of parents and teachers, was established by a concerned Port Chester couple, Yvonne Gasperino and Glen Dalgleish.

"Not validated by educators and yet already adopted by 45 states, the Common Core State Standards prematurely claims to enhance the critical thinking skills of students in PreK-12th grade and prepare them for the 21st century global economy," the group said in the statement.

The event is free and open to the public and will include a panel of education experts from a wide spectrum of groups across the nation.

The speakers include Jamie Gass, director of the Center for School Reform at the Pioneer Institute, Neal McCluskey, associate director of the Cato Center for Educational Freedom, Emmett McGroarty, executive director of the Preserve Innocence Initiative at the American Principles Project, Sheila Kaplan, founder of EducationalNewYork.com and Christopher Tienken, assistant professor, Seton Hall University.
