Friday was the last day of a four-day sixth-grade engineering program, supported by i2 Learning, an organization that Lowey introduced to the district.
The district obtained grants to cover the cost of daylong teacher training for the middle school teachers and all required materials for this program.
Lowey met with district and school administrators and teachers and then tour the classrooms to see the projects created by the students.
During her visit, students engaged in the final day of their hands-on engineering-based project, working in small groups lead by two teachers.
Each sixth-grade academy completed a different engineering project during the week:
- Crawford Park Academy: engineering prosthetics.
- Tamarack Tower Academy: engineering ice cream.
- Lyons Park Academy: architects of time.
