RYE BROOK, N.Y. -- Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin announced his withdrawal from the U.S. Senate race at the State Republican Convention in Rochester early Friday morning.
According to a statement released by Carvin's strategist Bill O'Reilly, Carvin originally entered the race to ensure that the "party faithful" had a strong choice in nominees.
When Carvin entered the race only a few short weeks ago, there was only one other candidate, Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos, in the field. Since Carvin's announcement, New York City attorney Wendy Long and Rep. Bob Turner (R-Queens) have thrown their hats in the ring.
"My number one goal in entering the race was to ensure that the Republican Party had a nominee capable of defeating Ms. Gillibrand in November," Carvin said. "But I believe any of the candidates in this race can beat her."
Carvin added that he believes he would've received the necessary majority to get on the ballot, and reiterated his support for his party.
"I am 100 percent confident that I would have received the 25 percent of the Republican delegate vote necessary to get on the ballot," Carvin said. "I am now comfortable that my party is well represented."
