PORT CHESTER, N.Y. - The Rye Town Council unanimously adopted the 2012 budget at their last meeting of the year on Tuesday. The 2012 budget calls for a 17.4% decrease in the tax levy, marking the fourth year in a row under Supervisor Joe Carvin that spending and taxes have decreased.
"This budget is major newe when the other communities in Westchester and New York State are either barely slipping under the tax cap, or in open revolt against the tax cap," Rye Town spokesperson Dick Hubert said.
Among the other issues discussed at the meeting was the Council's ongoing battle with corporations in regard to property taxes. According to Hubert, corporations like Home Depot are only willing to pay 10% of their tax assessment.
"Supervisor Carvin, Town Assessor Mitch Markowitz, and Town Attorney Paul Noto have had their hands full," Hubert said. "Now Supervisor Carvin has taken the unprecedented step of going direct to Home Depot's corporate headquarters and challenging their top executives to pay up."
On a side note, Carvin, who is in London on business, became the first member of the Rye Town Council to participate in a meeting overseas by being "skyped" in.
