RYE, N.Y. -- Debbie Simon made sure to bring plenty of bagels to Rye Town Park so her grandchildren could feed the ducks.
"We always stop by the duck pond when we come to the park," said Simon of Rye Brook.
Simon's grandchildren, Sidney and Noah Brookman, had Monday off school for Columbus Day and she made sure that they got outside to enjoy the warm weather, which peaked near 82 degrees.When asked what she knew about Columbus Day, Sidney, 9, gave a straightforward answer.
"There's no school!" she exclaimed tossing a chunk of bagel into a throng of hungry ducks and geese.
The fourth grader did learn about the holiday's namesake last week in school and was able to name the three ships that Christopher Columbus sailed with across to the Atlantic, where he landed in October of 1492 on the islands known today as the Bahamas, which were inhabited by indigenous people.
"The Pinta, the Niña, and the Santa María," she said with confidence.
For Simon and her grandchildren, Columbus Day was less about history and more about spending the day together, and also with the ducks.
