Report: Port Chester Donates Less Than Other Towns

The villages of Port Chester and Rye Brook ranked 1,691 out of 28,000 towns across the country in charitable giving, according to results of "How America Gives," a national study on charitable donations throughout every community and town in the United States, released earlier this week by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

The data was collected based on dollar amounts released by the Internal Revenue Service in 2008 showing the value of charitable deductions claimed by taxpayers. The study includes only taxpayers who reported incomes of $50,000 or more to prevent discrepancies in the data for those who make less.

Compared to the neighboring City of Rye, which ranked 34 among all 28,725 towns considered, the zip code 10573 that covers both Port Chester and Rye did not fare as well on the ranking. The study showed residents contributed a total of $19.2 million with an average contribution of $2,497.

In Port Chester and Rye Brook, the majority of donations – 25.3 percent - were made by those under the age of 20. Of the 20 to 29-year-old age range, 14.4 percent made donations. In the 30 to 44-year-old-age range, 23.4 percent made donations. In the 45 to 64-age-range, 24.1 percent made donations. In the 65 and up age range, 12.8 percent made donations.

The study also showed that those who make $50,000 to $75,000 tend to give an average of 7.6 percent of their income after taxes, housing, food and other living expenses. Meanwhile, those who make $100,000 or more donate just 4.2 percent of their income, according to the study.

Westchester County ranked 12 out of 3,115 counties in the country with a total of $1.2 billion in contributions. The average contribution across the county was $2,796. Though Port Chester scored lower than other towns on the rankings overall, the county’s high rank is not surprising considering New York State is poised at second of all 50 states and Puerto Rico, according to the study. New York residents contributed a total of $11.3 billion, with the average contribution coming in at $2,266.
