Port Chester Girl Writes About The Fourth Of July

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- For Annmarie Loper, the Fourth of July was not just an opportunity to eat barbecue and see fireworks, but a time to reflect on how America was founded.

"Everything this country has become, a lot of fighting had to happen for it," said Annmarie, 13, who participated in an essay contest about the significance of the Fourth of July as part of Port Chester's annual ceremony on Monday.

Annmarie was one of seven students from Corpus Christi-Holy Rosary School who received awards for their essays. Students from public schools in the Port Chester-Rye Brook Union Free School District also received awards. In her essay, Annmarie said she talked about the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and the freedoms that were put in place for Americans.

"It's nice to be rewarded for what I wrote," she said.
