PORT CHESTER, N.Y. - That Discount Place, a Port Chester grocery store that provides bargains to residents from all over Westchester, has announced it will close its doors by the end of the month.
Owner Jane Stout said that the purpose of the store, which accepts food stamps and credit cards, was to provide groceries passed the expiration date and with cosmetic damages at "dime store" prices.
"(We) had hoped to help the people of the village by putting more disposable income into their pockets to feed their families," Stout said. "Our regulars are upset at us being forced to close."
Port Chester Mayor Dennis Pilla said he was saddened to learn That Discount Place was closing.
"Jane Stout has been pioneering a concept that is new to our region," Pilla said. "It's too bad that it did not catch on quicker. I wish Jane success in her new pursuits and I am confident that she will be successful in whatever else she undertakes."
Stout said that cash flow difficulties faced by most small business forced the store's closure. Starting on Thursday the store will launch a going out of business sale that will slash prices by an additional 25 to 30 percent.
The current inventory, which includes diapers, Keurig pods, laundry detergent, cough medicine, whole grain croutons, Silver Palate, Kellogg, Betty Crocker and Duncan Hines brands, is all approximately 50 percent less than that found on retail shelves, Stout said.
The store is located at 155 Irving Ave. and is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays.
