PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- The Port Chester Costco reopened Tuesday after the Port Chester Fire Department found the wholesale warehouse's alarm system was offline Monday and ordered it closed.
Port Chester Fire Chief Kevin McFadden said he received a call from the Department of Emergency Services in Valhalla around 3:15 p.m. on Monday notifying him that Costco's alarm system had been offline for approximately four hours while hundreds of unaware shoppers perused the shelves.
"It was a definite lack of communication between the alarm company and the management of Costco," McFadden said.
According to McFadden, if an incident had occurred while the alarm system was offline the fire department would not have been issued an alert. McFadden added that the fire department was forced to close the premises and issue a safety violation while the alarm company serviced the faulty alarm system.
A call to Costco's regional office in Virginia this afternoon seeking comment was not returned.
