WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – A two-car collision at the Interstate-95 southbound exit for 287 in the City of Rye ejected both occupants of a military truck, which flipped on its head, and killed the passenger Thursday morning, state police said.
The passenger was pronounced dead on scene and the driver was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the other car, which had extensive damage to its hood, suffered an unknown injury and was also taken to a nearby hospital, police said. No one else was in the dark blue sedan, which was left facing the wrong way at the foot of the exit ramp.
The 10:20 a.m. crash has snarled traffic on I-95 with the Exit 21 ramp closed. A single lane on the two-lane ramp reopened at 12:25 p.m. On the highway, one lane remains closed. Northbound traffic has cleared up, but southbound traffic remains backed up into Connecticut.
Both vehicles remain on the scene as of 12:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
An investigative reconnaissance team is investigating the incident. Police said the accident did not appear to involve a drunk driver but details of the accident are still being collected.
The military vehicle was a standard army truck - called a light medium tactical vehicle (LMT) from the Connecticut National Guard and was transporting training materials to Fort Dix in New Jersey.
Public Affairs Officer for the Connecticut Army National Guard Capt. Dawn Surprenant said, "we don’t have any specifics right now as to what unit that truck was from."
A press conference will be held at 3 p.m. at the Connecticut Army National Guard headquarters in Hartford, Conn.
