RYE BROOK, N.Y. -- Rye Brook's Blind Brook Community Coalition launched its "What You Permit, What You Promote" campaign on Tuesday evening in front of a packed crowd of educators, police officers, elected officials and community members at the village hall.
The campaign pushes parents to develop strong relationships and open communication lines with their children about the hazards and consequences of substance abuse. According to surveys conducted by the coalition, the majority of students requested that their parents get involved by setting limits.
"Research indicates that families can provide protection from drug abuse by establishing a strong parent-student bond, through parental involvement in a child's life, in setting clear limits and in consistent enforcement of consequences," Coalition Chair and Blind Brook Guidance Director Mary Mediate said.
Blind Brook High School seniors Madison Lieberman, Kira Helberg and Jacqueline Cirano collectively designed and drew the logo for the campaign, which features a teddy bear, a bottle of alcohol, a doll and a video game controller.
"We wanted to do a picture that was obvious, but was also open for interpretation," Helberg said.
Lieberman added that they wanted to incorporate all age groups and appeal to all ages, because the issue does affect more than just teens.
The campaign launch also featured speeches from Rye Brook Mayor Joan Feinstien, Blind Brook Superintendent William Stark and Rye Brook Chief of Police Greg Austin. Judy Mezey from the Westchester-based substance abuse prevention program Student Assistant Services was highly complimentary of the coalition's efforts.
"I would just like to say I love Blind Brook," Mezey said. "The coalition you have put together with so little resources has gotten so much done, and your youth are really amazing as well. I can't say enough, it's an amazing community."
