The center is partnering with the Volunteer Center of United Way to create a new program in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The “Bowls for Hunger” workshops are free to the community in collaboration with local not-for-profit organizations throughout the county.
“These workshops are a wonderful way to bring the community together to be creative and at the same time to raise awareness about the needs right here in our own county,” said Clay Art Center Executive Director Leigh Taylor Mickelson in a press release.
The bowls created during the workshops will be glazed and fired by Clay Art Center volunteers and donated to the Hope Community Services soup kitchen in New Rochelle. Each of the Hope Community Services clients visiting the soup kitchen will receive a clay bowl to take home as a reminder of the day.
Community members ages 8 and up can participate in events that will produce up to 200 bowls in a single day. Workshops will be Jan. 19 at:
• Clay Art Center - Session One from 1 to 2 p.m. and Session Two from 2 to 3 p.m. • Greenburgh Nature Center, 99 Dromore Road, Greenburgh: Session One from 10 to 11 a.m. and Session Two from 11 a.m. to noon. • Clay Art Center at ArtsWestchester, 31 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains from 1 to 2 p.m. • Peekskill Clay Studios, 1000 N. Division St., Peekskill: Session One from 10 to 11 a.m. and Session two from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Clay Art Center, 40 Beech Street, Port Chester, is a not-for-profit ceramic art organization offering exhibitions, clay classes for adults and children, studio spaces for clay artists and outreach programs in the community. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays or by appointment.
