The small male gator was found in Rockland County at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, in the Minisceongo Creek near Bridge Street in Garnerville.
According to the Haverstraw Police Department, officers responded to a call about an alligator in the water. They assisted in removing the gator from the water with help from the Hudson Valley Humane Society of Pomona.
Late Thursday, the Humane Society said a herpetology expert from the Bronx Zoo "was kind enough to come by tonight and take a look at our friend to assess his overall health, and “HE” is in pretty good shape!"
"We have two names going for him: Philippe and Al E. Gator. We would like help from the community to weigh in on which name is preferred," the group said on Facebook.
On Friday, Nov. 15, the organization supported the gator by continuing to warm him up.
The state Department of Conservation is assisting with placement, which, in the state, requires specific credentials.
The Humane Society also said the quick-thinking and professionalism of the Haverstraw Police helped to save the juvenile alligator.
