3K Foreign Contraband Cigarettes Seized, Destroyed By USPS In NY, Other States: Officials
Around 3,000 packages of foreign contraband cigarettes bound for Connecticut, New York, and other states have been found and destroyed by the US Postal Service since the beginning of the year, officials said. According to Connecticut Attorney General William Tong, the seizures were a result of a settlement between the USPS and several states in August 2022 that forced the Postal Service to destroy untaxed foreign cigarettes instead of returning the illegally-mailed packages back to the sender. The identities have been released of two people who were killed after a small plane crashed near Westchester County Airport. The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 near the airport in White Plains. This story has been updated. A 17-year-old student at a prestigious academy in New York has died by suicide, authorities said. The incident took place in Westchester County around 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 17 at the EF Academy in Thornwood, according to Chief Paul J. Oliva, of the Mount Pleasant Police. State officials say that an agreement has been reached for a $9.5 billion project to create a new international terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Gov. A 39-year-old man was nabbed by customs officials attempting to smuggle 34 live finches into the country to be used in singing contests in Brooklyn and Queens.
