Werner Alois Strobel, 88 years old of South Salem, passed away on Wednesday June 14, 2023 in the loving presence of his wife and daughter. A celebration of life will be held at North Salem Golf Club on July 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone who would like to tell a story about Werner is more than welcome to attend. A major New York tech company founder who blasted into space with actor William Shatner last month was aboard a small plane that crashed in New Jersey, killing him and a local flight instructor, authorities confirmed Friday, Nov 12. Glen M. De Vries, age 49, of New York City, and Thomas P. Fischer, age 54, of Hopatcong, New Jersey, were both aboard the single-engine Cessna 172 that crashed in a wooded area of a state park near Lake Kemah around 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, according to New Jersey State Police spokeswoman Brandi Slota and the FAA. Small Plane Reportedly Down In NJ; Westchester Police Aviation Unit Assists
Two people aboard a small plane survived an emergency landing late Sunday afternoon in northwest New Jersey, State Police confirmed. A distress call was transmitted from the craft over Lake Hopatcong in Sussex County just after 4 p.m., responders said. The Cessna 172 then landed hard in Lafayette Township, eight or so miles from Sussex County Airport and about 25 miles south of the New York State border, NJSP Lawrence Peele confirmed. The craft sustained minor damage, he said.
