Bpwv Girls Swim Team Excels Against Greeley

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Horace Greeley brought out the best in the Briarcliff/Pleasantville/Westlake/Valhalla girls swim team Thursday.

Even though Horace Greeley came away with a 99.5-73.5 win at Pace University, the host team turned in some excellent performances and many girls lowered their times from the team’s first meet.

“The girls put 100 percent into each of their swims and their times improved,” BPWV coach Jane Robinson said. “That is what happens when you swim against better teams.

“My team is young this year after we graduated 10 seniors. I think they were very competitive today and will be very competitive in our league. Horace Greeley is just amazing.”

Rosie Reilly, a sophomore at Pleasantville, won the 100-yard breaststroke. Abby Kuhn was the winner in the 100 backstroke and also combined with Jessica Cho, Katherine Shine and Wendy Woeckener to take the 400 freestyle relay. Woeckener, a captain and Pleasantville senior, also finished third in the 200 freestyle. Jelyn Brown, a junior at Briarcliff, tied for second in the 50 freestyle and also joined Amanda Leopizzi, Reilly and Kuhn to place second in the 200 medley relay.

“The breaststroke is Rosie’s best stroke,” said Robinson, in her 22nd year. “Rosie gets her game on when she swims this and is always up for it.

“Jelyn is a sprinter who swims the last leg of the medley and freestyle relays. She brought her times down from our last meet. Wendy has gone to states the last two years. Two years ago Wendy swam on our 200 freestyle relay team that medaled.”
