PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Fifth- and sixth-grade students in Pleasantville Middle School readied their passports Friday to travel the globe for the school's annual hemisphere day.
Classrooms throughout the school were tranformed by parents and teachers into Western and Eastern Hemispheres countries such as Italy, Brazil, India, Africa, and Greece.
"In each classroom theres usually food and theres usually a bit of a history lesson, and then theres like an activity or a craft that they can do," said fifth-grade teacher Ashley O'Hara.
Students in Brazil saw how low they could go in a limbo contest. Students in Italy shouted "Toga! Toga!" and students in Mexico danced their sombreros off. Each country or region also contained its own delicacies for the students to try, such as jellyfish in China or goat in the Dominican Republic.
The day is designed as a hands-on learning approach for the students that have studied the countries throughout the school year. Fifth-grade students focused on the Western Hemisphere and sixth-grade students focused on the Eastern Hemisphere.
"We do a culminating project at the end of the year where each child is assigned one of five countries," O'Hara said, "and they pretend to be ambassadors traveling to that country and do kind of like a whole research project around that."
