PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- Pleasantville jewelry designer Laurie Berg said it all came to her when she was watching the movie "Tin Cup" and saw Rene Russo's necklace.

"If I saw something I liked, I made it," said Berg, who runs Laurie Berg Designs in Pleasantville. "I have an innate ability to design what I see. That pearl necklace was my first project.”

Berg considers herself an artist. She started making jewelry 25 years ago as a hobby. Once she had children, she started making jewelry from home. She would do trunk shows periodically introducing her designs and learning what local women wanted.

She describes her jewelry as “travel” jewelry that helps makes an outfit "pop." Berg uses semi-precious beads strung together with sterling silver or vermeil. The beads come from India, Thailand, China, South America, Brazil and Columbia. All the handiwork is done in New York City.

Berg also makes Tree of Life, Oms and Buddhas for good luck. She tries to make jewelry that corresponds with the fashion of Westchester women, which is mostly black, white and gray. This year, she said she is focused on shades of blue, cream and gray/beige.

Berg's upcoming trunk shows are April 30 at Lester's at the Rye Ridge Shopping Center in Rye Brook and May 5-6 at EBBA in Katonah.
