Pleasantville Fund For Learning Awards More Than $50,000 In Grants

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- Thirteen educational programs in the Pleasantville School District recently received Excellence in Education grants from the Pleasantville Fund For Learning.

The grants total $53,986 with the goal of fostering innovation and enrichment in the school. The programs are not funded by any tax revenues. The programs include:

• Active Learning Experience Core: supplies and equipment for existing Middle School and High School classrooms that will support active learning strategies and techniques; submitted by curriculum coordinators Melissa Brown (MS) and Chris Welsh (PHS).

• Brick Building Mosaics: building bricks and base plates for kindergarten students to create mosaic designs; submitted by Debbie Anttila, Sheila Moran, Deanna Nola, Jennifer Picco, and Kim Vecchiariello.

• Early Coding with Bee Bots: programmable robots for BRS computer science, math, and science lessons; submitted by Lisa Rodriguez.

• Jazz Improvisation: guest artist project for in-depth work with students on jazz improvisaton; submitted by Tom Heintzelman.

• Sensory Classroom: sensory classroom products for BRS students with cognitive and physical impairments; submitted by Cara Padovani and Kyle Garrigan.

• Standing Up to Learn: 4 Stand to Learn desks and 16 stools for a BRS pilot program in flexible classroom seating and active learning environments; submitted by Lisa Long, Laura Twomey, and Peggy Galotti.

• Surface Studio Computer: a Surface Studio Computer for PHS art electives in graphic & 3D design, digital storytelling, animation, and photo, music & video editing; submitted by PHS students Andrei Captan and Joe Zucker, advisor Jim Maron.

• Tools for Success: keyboards and headsets for the PHS special education program, for use with iPads; submitted by Dan Brink, Rosemary Browne, Deirdre Vedovino, Kristin Weiss, and Susi Wilson.
