During the simulation, 50 participants were divided into "families." The Willcox gym was lined with tables representing community resources and services such as a bank, employer, school, child care center and jail. The simulation lasted a “month,” and each “week” lasted 15 minutes, with a three-minute reprieve between each week.
Professors Angela Northrup and Elizabeth Berro, along with Martha Greenberg, organized the simulation to benefit freshmen and sophomore undergraduate students majoring in nursing, criminal justice, social work and psychology, increasing their understanding of the difficulties faced by underprivileged populations.
