Pleasantville Schools Set for Light Construction Work This Summer

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pleasantville students leaving for the summer should expect to see their schools just as they were left when they return in the fall – only cleaner.

The Pleasantville School District’s Building and Grounds Director Stephen Chamberlain said his department will only carry out minor construction on the schools over the summer. He said the light agenda is a welcome contrast to the previous two summers when additions were built on the high school.

The biggest project being undertaken this summer will be the addition of 21 security cameras on the interior and exterior of Pleasantville Middle School. Chamberlain said the middle school is the only school in the district that does not have cameras on its building. The project will cost the district about $35,000, he said.

"It allows me and other administrators and our security to keep an eye on things that are going on," Chamberlain said. "We can go back and review if we had situations. Plus it’s a deterrent. People pull up to a school building and see cameras, it’s going to deter."

Chamberlain is also hoping to repair the cracked tennis courts behind Pleasantville Middle School. A last-minute inclusion of $55,000 for the repairs was added to the 2012-13 budget, but completing construction before the fall might be an ambitious goal, he said.

"Over the summer we have to go through a bid process and deal with the state education department," Chamberlain said. "We’re going to try to get it done this summer, be we’re not certain that we’re going have enough time."

Athletic Director John Bauerlein previously said fixing the courts are a necessity for keeping the district’s tennis teams intact. Currently, the cracked courts force Pleasantville teams to play home games at Pace University. The repairs are expected to have a 10-year shelf-life.

Smaller projects include repairing an eroded egress at the middle school for emergency vehicles, routine cleaning and re-finishing gym floors with polyurethane.
