District Clerk Irene Powers Honored Tops Pleasantville Schools Update

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- Here's a look at what's been happening in the Pleasantville School District:

  • The Board recognized the following academic, artistic, and athletic student achievements: Boys’ Track League Championship; Boys’ Lacrosse League, Section, and Regional Championships; the top 10 percent of the Class of 2015;  the Marmaduke 11th Grade Writing Award-winners (Sarah Cusack, Sophie Loring, Sophie Dora Tulchin, and David Zweibaum); Metro Awards nominees and winners; and the Middle School Olympics of the Visual Arts winners and honorable mentions.
  • Athletic Director John Bauerlein presented a Spring Athletic Season Recap.
  • Superintendent Mary Fox-Alter, District administrators, and the Board honored retiring District Clerk/Secretary to the Superintendent Irene Powers;  
  • Fox-Alter also presented Board members with certificates from the Westchester Putnam School Boards Association honoring them for their “support of public education, commitment to academic excellence, and dedicated leadership”;
  • Board president Shane McGaffey announced that Fox-Alter is the recipient of Pleasantville Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow award in recognition of her advocacy on behalf of students here and throughout New York State.
  • The Board accepted $21,000 from the BRS PTA; an additional $300 from the Pleasantville Fund for Learning; $10,424 from SEPTA; and $100 from the Hiawatha Lodge Chess Club.

At Bedford Road School...

  • Fourth graders and the PTA Garden Committee assembled new, bigger beds in the Edible Garden, which will allow students to plant and harvest more vegetables in the fall.
  • Grades 1-4 participated in annual Field Day Events, organized by Tom Micucci, Tony Beccera, and Bob Bernarducci.
  • Sixth graders visited their BRS kindergarten buddies on Friday to share the individualized Super Hero books they wrote, the culmination of their year-long partnership.  

At the Middle School...

  • On Tuesday, the fifth grade walked to the Jacob Burns Film Center to watch Brooklyn Castle, a film about five members of a chess team in an inner city junior high school that has won more national championships than any other in the country.
  • All 141 sixth graders participated in some specific way in the grade’s 8th Annual Green Carpet Awards, held on Tuesday. This Oscars-like event serves as a celebratory review of some of the many critical literary concepts learned throughout the year including theme, irony, and symbolism.
  • The school’s Physical Education Department raised $2,357 for the American Heart Association from its two basketball tournaments for grades five through eight held during activity period, and the fifth grade’s participation in Hoops for Heart Week.
  • The second MS Art Show of the school year took place on Thursday evening at the Mt. Pleasant Public Library and highlighted student artwork of the third and fourth quarters.

At the High School...

  • James McCarthy will perform with the All-National Honor Ensembles Mixed Chorus at the National Association for Music Education gala, Oct. 25-28, in Nashville, Tenn. He is only the second PHS vocalist to attain this honor. James also was accepted into the highly competitive Pre-College Program at Julliard.
