Pleasantville Takes Aim at Commercial Vehicles

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pleasantville’s Board of Trustees will look into reducing the amount of commercial traffic on Bedford Road after a resident complained of 18-wheel trucks illegally using the road.

According to the board, the village does not allow for commercial vehicles to use the road unless they are making a local stop or delivery, which resident Michele Lucia said is often not the case.

“These trucks do not belong, and I don't know why they cannot be consistently prohibited from driving on Bedford Road,” Lucia told the board last week.

Trustee Jonathan Cunningham agreed that it happens often and said it becomes an issue during school drop-off and pick-up hours, as Manville Road tends to back up.

“I think the trucks opt for Bedford Road about that time because it's quicker than trying to sit in that line that's on Manville,” Cunningham said. “I'd like to see them tagged, because they've been zooming down Bedford Road when the kids are walking.”

In a poll posted on the Plesantville Daily Voice last week, readers voted Bedford Road as having the worst traffic in the village.

Mayor Peter Scherer said the Pleasantville Police Department is aware of the issue, but said he will instruct Chief Richard Love to look for more effective ways of discouraging commercial vehicles.

“We don't have somebody to do it all the time,” he said. “The hope, the intent, and obviously the goal is to do it in ways that maximize its long-term effectiveness so that truckers get the idea that it ain't the place they belong.”
