PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. A construction bid was awarded last week by the Pleasantville Board of Trustees on a project that will permanently close the southbound entrance ramp to the Saw Mill River Parkway from Parkway Terrace.
The project will bring a new sidewalk that will extend from Bedford Road to Manville Road along Parkway Terrace. Traffic on the road will flow only one way, effectively closing the Saw Mill ramp. Mayor Peter Scherer said the project was requested by neighborhood residents in 2007 who wanted relief from commuters using the road.
Scherer said the village hopes to "resolve what has been sort of a long-term problem, and also to address the craziness that happens on that street at some points when theres a line of cars trying to use that slip ramp to get on the Saw Mill."
The lowest of seven bidders for the project was Acocella Contracting, which will carry out the construction work for $147,460. Village Administrator Patti Dwyer said early estimates for the project were around $170,000.
Dwyer said most of the project will be paid for by a block grant that was awarded to the village in 2009.
"A lot of effort had gone into constructing a project and assembling a project with the assistance of the county or federal funds," Dwyer said. "$100,000 of this is being funded through the block grant. The rest is supported by the village."
When the project is completed, residents will still be able to use the current southbound entrance ramp that goes toward Thornwood. However, the new configuration will eliminate the triangle-shaped traffic pattern. Traffic currently can flow onto the ramp from Manville and Parkway. In the new pattern, drivers will be able to use only the ramp from Manville Road.
