Mount Pleasant Library To Stay Closed Into August

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The Mount Pleasant Library on Bedford Road will remain closed into August as the library continues the first phase of its roof-replacement project. Library officials originally were hopeful the building could re-open by July 30, but the threat of rain has slowed the work down.

"Unfortunately it is not just rain that leads to delays, but also the threat of rain," said Library Director John Fearon. "The nature of the work means they expose a very large area of decking and a heavy rain-storm could create a lot of damage. So if the forecast is for thunder-storms, they don't start that day." Fearon is now expecting the library to open at some point during the week of August 6, but said he should have a much better sense by next Wednesday. "If the weather cooperates next week - and long-term forecasts are not bad - we have a shot at having this phase wrapped up by the end of next week," Fearon said.   During the closing of the Main Library, hours will be extended at the Branch Library at 125 Lozza Drive in Valhalla. Temporary hours will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

Mayor Peter Scherer said closing the library is necessary because the construction work involves asbestos removal.

Scherer said the contractor who will be working on the project may often begin work around 7 a.m. and finish at 10 p.m. He said there may be on-site lighting on the roof to assist the workers after dark.

To help keep residents informed, the library will maintain a blog. Residents also can call the Main Library at (914) 769-0548 as the voicemail will be updated regularly.
