Fire on Heritage Drive in Pleasantville

This story has been updated.

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - No one was home when a fire broke out at a two-story house at 17 Heritage Drive about 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, Pleasantville Police Chief Bruce LaMonica said.

The fire spread from one end of the two-story house to the other and spilled out into the yard, igniting a backyard grill and causing a brush fire before it was brought under control, LaMonica said.

Mearcelo Carvalhais was working construction at a house a few doors down on Heritage Drive when he and his co-workers heard an explosion and went running to help.

"We heard a noise that sounded like a propane tank exploding at the back of the house," Carvalhais said. "So we called 911 and then we ran over to the house. We kicked the door in and tried to go inside to see if anybody was there, but there was too much smoke to go inside."

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Lamonica said, but he thought the explosion was the result, not the cause of the fire.

"We believe it spread to the back and hit a propane tank on a personal grill, which caused an explosion," LaMonica said.

Pleasantville Fire Department was assisted by firefighters from surrounding communities including Thornwood, Pocantico Hills, Millwood and Chappaqua.

Shortly after 3 p.m., firefighters had the fire under control and the flames were extinguished.  Inspectors from the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services were on hand to investigate a cause of the fire.
