“It's been overwhelmingly positive,” Farmers Market Committee Chair Peter Rogovin said Saturday morning. “It was like the Friday after Thanksgiving at Toys R Us. We cut the ribbon and then 100 people poured in. They just keep on coming.”

The Pleasantville farmers market opened its first winter market Saturday at Pleasantville Middle School, drawing a crowd of residents and local vendors. Almost all of the vendors from the summer farmers market, as well as a few new faces, were selling local produce and foodstuffs at the school to eager customers.

The new winter market will run each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rogovin said the market will continue until May 11, when organizers will take a week off before the summer market begins.

Saturday's event was the culmination of a collaboration between Foodchester, a nonprofit organization that runs the market, the Village of Pleasantville and the Pleasantville Union Free School District, Rogovin said. This was the first year that Foodchester has been able to host an indoor market in its 15-year history.

“I think it's blowing everyone's expectations,” Rogovin said, noting that several booths were quickly running out of things to sell early in the day. “I've never seen any of our markets this crowded.”
