MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- While people often think of sunburn as an unfortunate staple of summer life, what most don't realize is the winter months present a unique set of problems for our epidermis. With Australian actor Hugh Jackman's announcement this week that he has undergone his fifth surgery since 2013 to remove skin cancer, it's important to take the simple steps to prevent the disease.

According to the Center for Disease Control, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. As a result, doctors have seen a sharp increase in the number of annual treatments. Skin cancer can occur in two forms: melanoma and non-melanoma. Non-melanoma cancers, the most common form, are almost always caused by sun exposure.

"Those enjoying outdoor sports in winter, particularly skiers and snowboarders, need to know that snow reflects UV rays and that higher altitudes mean slightly higher UV penetration," said Dr. Stuart Zweibel, a board certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon at Northern Westchester Hospital. "Winter’s low humidity and wind exposure can dry and irritate the skin, making moisturizers another key protection."
