The Quaker Bridge, which carries Quaker Bridge Road over the Croton River in Cortlandt, was "red-flagged" and closed to vehicular traffic, Cortlandt town officials announced on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
The bridge, built in 1894, is owned and maintained by Westchester County. Plans had already been in place to replace it with a new structure, as it was known to be structurally impaired, town officials said.
However, the bridge has now been deemed unsafe by the county, which will now come up with long-term plans for its replacement.
In the meantime, motorists in the area will need to use alternate routes. These will be made publicly available at a later time, town officials said on Wednesday.
