A pair of research professor, the founder of a public relations firm and the head coach of the varsity basketball team top this year’s New Rochelle Wall of Fame honorees. Former Mount Vernon Special Needs Student Wins $28M Rape Lawsuit
A former special needs student in Westchester has been awarded $28 million in a rape lawsuit. A jury awarded the $28 million to a former student that was raped nearly seven years ago after being led off the Mount Vernon High School campus when she was supposed to be in class and on the special education bus. According to her attorneys, the verdict is believed to be the largest physical and sexual assault jury verdict in New York State history. Local residents looking to beat the heat with the dog days of summer fast approaching will be able to do so at an area high school’s pool, which will be open to local families. The Mount Vernon School District announced that this summer, the pool at the high school will be open to host family laps and general swimming, beginning on Monday, July 9. The pool will be available to the public on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. The Mount Vernon Board of Education has approved a near $252 million budget for the upcoming year, with Westchester County’s lowest tax rate increase for homeowners. Classes Resume At Mount Vernon High School After Gas Leak Evacuation
Mount Vernon High School was briefly evacuated on Thursday morning, when there was a gas issue in a science classroom. Shortly before the first classes of the day were set to get underway, a small gas leak was found in one of the labs, forcing the evacuation of the building. Con Edison crews and the Mount Vernon Fire Department were called to the scene to investigate and gave the “all clear” at approximately 9 a.m., about an hour after the evacuation. Classes then resumed normally.
