Putnam County resident Joe Piscopo Jr., age 49, of Brewster, the co-owner of Johnny's Pizzeria in Mount Vernon, died on Friday, Jan. 29. Know for his hearty and friendly laugh, Piscopo ran the 79-year-old restaurant with his brother, Ricky, and sisters Concetta and Tina after their mother Maria Piscopo died in 2018 at age 69 from injuries sustained in a crash on I-684. The fire broke out at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, in a Mount Vernon shopping center on Lincoln Avenue, prompting the closure of Johnny’s Pizzeria as the owners take steps to repair damage to the building, which has been open for more than 75 years.  "Not to worry, we will be back as you all know we have been through worse the last couple of years," Johnny's said on Instagram on Sunday. Maria C. Piscopo, age 69, who lived in Brewster, and her late husband, Joseph, took over Johnny's Pizzeria in Mount Vernon from Joseph's father who started the business 76 years ago. Results Are In: This Eatery Crowned 2018 DVlicious Best Pizza Champion Of the many great pizza places in Westchester County, only one was crowned DVlicious champion. Because of your votes, the winner of the 2018 DVlicious Pizza Contest is Johnny's in Mount Vernon with 32 percent of votes. Sal's in Mamaroneck took a close second with 28 percent of votes, and coming in third was Paradise Pizza in Verplanck. Johnny's has been in business since 1942 and is Zagat rated. The restaurant only sells pies -- no slices. Congratulations, Johnny's!
