PELHAM, N.Y. The Pelham Youth Rugby Club brought a record four teams Saturday to the NYC Cup, the largest flag rugby tournament in North America. Pelham was the only club to have multiple teams at the tournament with one team in the elementary division and three in the middle school division.
None of the teams won any titles, but each advanced beyond the pool stage. The elementary team lost by one try in the semifinals, while Pelham White of the middle school division swept through the pool stage but lost in sudden death overtime in the semifinals. Pelham Red lost by one try in the semifinals and Pelham Black lost in the quarterfinals.
Thirty-five teams played in the middle school division and 25 teams played in the elementary school division this year.
The club has a track record of great success at the NYC Cup. Pelham won the middle school division in 2008 and the elementary division in 2009.
