Pelham Softball Rallies To First-Round Win Over SH

Pelham enters its Section 1 Class A quarterfinal-round softball game with fourth-seeded Ardsley riding an emotional high. The Pelicans, seeded fifth, scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning for an improbable 3-2 win over 12th-seeded Sleepy Hollow in a Section 1 Class A first-round game.  The winner of this game advances to a semifinal Thursday against the winner of No. 9 Beacon-No. 1 Pearl River. The win was especially sweet for Pelham, which has experienced its share of crushing first-round sectional losses during coach Keith Maley‘s 14 years. “In my time here, considering what we’ve experienced in sectional games, that was our greatest win ever,” Maley said. “That was a character win. The girls are in a great place right now and they are very loose for Ardsley. We’ve had two really good practices these past two days and they girls are prepared as they can be.” Pelham advanced to the quarterfinals with its thrilling rally. Samantha Wright drew a one-out walk and moved to second on an out. With two outs, Caitie Nesi laid down a bunt single up the first-base line. Maley, who was coaching third, sent Wright and she scored. Nesi moved to second on the throw home attempting to get Wright. Kelly Keith, the winning pitcher who finished with a three-hitter and 12 strikeouts, followed with a single to center, scoring Nesi. Maley was proud of his team and said it was only natural Keith got the winning hit. “Kelly was dominant pitching,” Maley said. “She had a great screwball. Of her 12 strikeouts, six were called third strikes on her screwball.”
