All week long, students have showcased their school spirit during a variety of events, dressing up in different themes each day before sporting their finest navy, gold and white before Friday’s pep rally.
Each of the high school’s fall sports teams’ talents were highlighted this week, beginning with Thursday’s “pink” field hockey game, where the team raised money to support breast cancer research. Then the undefeated swimming team’s record remained untarnished after hosting a meet at Sarah Lawrence College.
On Friday, the high school packed into the bleachers in the gym for a spirited pep rally, which included a performance from the cheerleading squad, music from the band and a Pelican playing guitar. There was then a community bar-be-cue before the football team takes on Roosevelt.
This year, Pelham Athletic Director Steve Luciana said that they had a special ceremony prepared for halftime where they will honor past players.
“Homecoming is great here at Pelham, there’s really great school spirit, and it’s both the athletes and the non-athletes. The entire student body really gets into it,” he said. “We’re expecting an amazing crowd (for the game) and for the first time, we’re going to honor past alumni who played at Pelham at halftime.
Homecoming festivities will continue on Saturday, with a 12-team volleyball tournament in the morning, before the boys and girl’s soccer teams play in the late afternoon.
“The class of 1956 is having a reunion this weekend, and it was enlightening to hear the stories as we walked around the building today. To hear them talk about the school and the passion and love they had to Pelham, after all this time, was amazing,” Principal Jeannine Clark said. “I can only wish the students that go here today will have that same passion and love that they did after all this time.”
