Concussions have become a growing problem in all contact sports, including hockey. In 2010-11, there were 80 concussions suffered by players in the NHL and 44 percent of them were suffered on legal hits.
The NCAA has outlawed all contact to the head and neck area in response to the growing numbers.
Concussions can cause "temporary loss of brain function leading to cognitive, physical and emotional symptoms, such as confusion, vomiting, headache, nausea, depression, disturbed sleep, moodiness, and amnesia," according to medicalnewstoday.com, and there can be lingering effects can last for decades.
Diagnosing concussions in children has become increasingly important as recent research has shown that returning to sports too quickly and sustaining another blow to the head can result in fatal brain swelling -- also known as second impact syndrome.
Coaches for Pelham Rec Sports including soccer, rugby, lacrosse, football and Little League baseball are also welcome to attend.
