Pelham Football Opens Season Saturday

PELHAM, N.Y. – Pelham Memorial High opens its football season Saturday when the Poughkeepsie Pioneers come calling.

Pelham is one of several Section 1 teams entering the season with a new coach, but the Pelicans’ situation is a bit more favorable. Justin Longobardi, who took over from head coach David Moskowitz earlier this year, coached most of the current varsity roster as junior varsity coach the last four years.

Unfortunately, that roster is rather thin, having numbered fewer than 20 players for a recent scrimmage against Westlake High School. On top of that, Pelham graduated electric running back Ke’shaun Stallworth.

Senior Jon Miller will anchor Pelham at fullback and at nose tackle. His sheer size makes him difficult to bring down and also allows him to penetrate opposing offensive lines when he lines up at nose tackle.

Poughkeepsie will provide a tough opening game challenge for the Pelicans. The Pioneers are the defending Class A champions and have a potentially explosive star in quarterback D’Andre Smith.

Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
