Pelham Beats Offensively Challenged Sleepy Hollow

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Pelham’s surge in the second half of the season continued Monday at Sleepy Hollow.

The Pelicans (12-5) beat the Horsemen, 38-28, on Monday thanks to a combination of strong defense and an afternoon to forget for Sleepy Hollow’s shooters. Pelham has been on a roll after a 4-5 start to the season and added one to the win column on Monday.

“It feels good,” said Pelham coach Mark Finegan. “I think that our defense clicked today. I don’t think that our offense is anywhere near clicking. We’ve got to figure it out.”

Pelham, again playing without Matt Henson, mustered just 38 points.  Stallworth missed Friday’s overtime thriller against Ardsley but he and Lance Stokes co-led the Pelicans with 11 points.

Finegan said Henson’s absence has left a hole on the court despite the team’s winning streak.

“Hopefully we get Henson back soon,” Finegan said. “That’s a big part of our offense. We’re a three part offense and when those three guys are together, it works real well. When one of them is missing, it’s like missing a piece of a clock. It doesn’t really work as well. Hopefully he gets back soon.”

Sleepy Hollow (6-11) coach Rob Rizzo said earlier in the season that his team was young and inexperienced.  On Monday, he said the loss was not due to those factors.

“We’ve made huge strides. We’ve gotten a lot of experience,” Rizzo said. “Things that we were doing wrong early in the season, those aren’t the problems.”

But Rizzo did acknowledge his team’s scoring struggles.

“We’re still offensively challenged,” Rizzo said. “If Harley (Falasca) doesn’t put the ball in the basket, we have a hard time scoring, but we have become more than that. We just need to share the ball and move the ball. Guys need to take shots that they can make and today we didn’t do it.”

Falasca led the Horsemen with 11 points while Jack Centra chipped in six.

Pelham’s final game of the season is Wednesday against Lincoln, while Sleepy Hollow will travel to Saunders for its last game.
