RYE, N.Y. Charlie McFarland was chasing the preliminary favorite for the Westchester County Swimming Championships boys 14-and-under 100 breaststroke title, but the Pelham Country Club swimmer rose to the occasion and raced past the competition to earn a spot on the first-place stand.
McFarland was the top seed with a best time of 1:02.94 in the dual meet season, but qualified second to Yorktowns Marcel Legros after the preliminaries.
McFarland showed his seeding in the final and raced to the finish in a time 1:05.06, beating second-place finisher Reginald Bradnock of Greenburgh Swim Club by more than two full seconds, and Legros, who placed third, by more than three seconds.
I swam as well as I could and I did my best every day so Im happy with that, the 14-year-old swimmer said. You cant hold back in the prelims because you want to be sure to qualify and everyone is swimming well. Everyone on our team swam personal bests this week and the team has done really well.
McFarland also placed fourth in the 14-and-under boys overall point standings with 16. Pelham Country Club placed 19th overall in the 39-team meet with Greenburgh winning the team title.
