In an announcement on Wednesday, Oct. 16, Westchester County Executive George Latimer unveiled data from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services showing a decline in crime rates.
According to the report, year-to-date shootings are down 34.5 percent from 29 shootings in January to September 2023 to 19 shootings in January to September 2024. This means there were 2.1 shootings per month in 2024, the best since 2019 when there were 1.9 per month.
Murders are also down 57 percent, with 3 incidents in January to May 2024. This makes it the lowest number of murders from any January to May period since 1990, officials said.
The report also included data for other types of crimes in Westchester:
- Rape was down 27 percent from last year;
- Robberies were down 16 percent from last year;
- Burglaries were down 11 percent from last year;
- Larcenies were down 13 percent from last year;
- Motor vehicle thefts were down 5 percent.
Latimer addressed the data: “Our commitment to fighting crime in Westchester County is stronger than ever. We’ve invested in the Westchester County Department of Public Safety at record levels because I am dedicated to keeping this County safe for all of us."
"This progress is thanks, in large part, to the dedication and bravery of our law enforcement officers," Latimer continued.
