PELHAM, N.Y. -- Peter Giarrizzo,  Superintendent of Pelham Public Schools, announced his resignation in a letter to the community Wednesday.

Giarrizzo, whose resignation is effective in August, is leaving to become superintendent of the North Shore Central School District. The Board of Education will formally accept his resignation at a Feb. 28 meeting. Giarrizzo has been superintendent for four years.

"Together, we have set out on a course of continuous improvement for our schools," Giarrizzo wrote in his letter. "We have built and continue to plan for exciting programming and learning opportunities for all students. Because it is as important as academic achievement, we have thought about student learning with an innovative, growth mindset and focused on social-emotional-learning as a core component of our instructional program. Our successes together are many."

In a separate letter to the community, the board praised Giarrizzo for vision and dedication helping to make Pelham one of the highest achieving districts in the country.

"As a result of these efforts, we are well positioned to carry on our tradition of academic excellence for all students," the board wrote.

The board said it will hire a specialized firm to help find qualified candidates did not rule out hiring an interim superintendent.

"It is essential the board hires the right candidate for our community, regardless of how long such a process may take," the board wrote.
