A team of Pelham teachers and administrators this school year are examining the K-5 math program and may extend its review into the middle school. It is expected the team will make a recommendation to the superintendent and school board in February.
Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Personnel Steven Garcia worked with Beth Finkelstein, K-5 math staff developer, and Jessica Vitale, 6-12 math supervisor, to develop a month-by-month timeline of expectations for the 27 K-8 teachers and principals participating in the math textbook review.
Garcia said their work will include surveying math programs in neighboring districts, selecting credible programs to review and developing a way to evaluate and critique qualifying programs.
The team will use Steven Leinwand’s Accessible Mathematics: 10 Instructional Shifts that Raise Student Achievement as a means of providing focus and guidance to their work.
“The Leinwand book is a highly recommended resource by many districts and serves as a model for highly effective mathematical teaching and learning,” Garcia said in a prepared statement.
