PELHAM, N.Y. -- Eighth-graders in the Pelham School District experienced a first-hand account Wednesday of the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp during the final months of World War II.According to a Facebook post from the district, Czechoslovakian-born Dr. Moshe Avita, a Holocaust survivor, spoke to the students to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the concentration camp's liberation by the U.S. Third Army on April 11, 1945.

Photo Credit: FacebookAvita was imprisoned in six different concentration camps during the war and, at the age of 14, was taken to Auschwitz along with his family.
According to the district, Avita shared his stories of suffering, separation from his family and, ultimately, liberation.
The presentation supported recent units taught to the students in their English and Social Studies classes.
