PELHAM MANOR, N.Y. - Harold Walter George Barnett of Pelham Manor died Dec. 15. He was 98.

Barnett was born Aug. 13, 1916, in Manhattan, to Barnett Walter Barnett and Philomena Cecilia Kiernan Barnett, and moved to New Rochelle, at an early age. He graduated from Iona Grammar School in 1931 and Iona Preparatory School in 1935. He was a graduate of Fordham University, BS, Class of 1940. He was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy in 1941, shortly before World War II. He served in the Naval Intelligence branch in Seattle, Washington.

After the war, he worked as a chemist in New York and New Jersey for more than 30 years with the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company in Manhattan, Montvale, N.J. and Horseheads. After he retired from the A&P in 1982, he did consulting work for the Clairol Company in Stamford. Conn. After his marriage he resided with his wife, first in Brooklyn and moved to Pelham Manor in 1950 and then to New Rochelle in 1957; they returned to Pelham Manor in 1960 and remained there for the rest of their lives. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Pelham Manor. He had served in an advisory capacity to the pastor in the 1960s and 1970s. He was also a founding member of the Knights of Columbus' Pelham Council #4413.

Barnett is survived by his son, Harry "Chip" Barnett; daughter, Maryalice C. Barnett, both of Pelham Manor; sisters-in-law, Teresa Harkins Butler of Mass., and Alice Harkins of Ohio; and cousin, William Sullivan of Vermont. He was predeceased by his parents; and wife, Mary.

A Celebration of Harold's life will be held Thursday, Dec. 18 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Pelham Funeral Home, 64 Lincoln Ave. A requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Pelham Manor. Interment will follow at Kensico Cemetery.
