A lifeguard saw a 4- to 5-foot shark and blew his whistle shortly before noon, according to the report. A 6-foot shark was then sighted shortly afterward.
The sightings led to the closure of Tobay Beach (which had approximately 2,000 beachgoers at the time) and adjacent beaches for approximately two hours.
Tobay Beach is a located in the middle of Jones Beach. Its name comes from Town of Oyster Bay, which manages and owns Tobay Beach.
