PELHAM, N.Y. A man fled a Pelham gas station Saturday evening without paying the $60 he owed, police said.
Pelham police spoke to an employee at the Mobil station on Lincoln Avenue at approximately 7:30 p.m. who said he saw a customer swipe a debit card at pump number two. The man then went to the register area and asked the worker to try to swipe the card, according to the police report.
The worker activated the pump for him and asked for the mans name and address in case he tried to leave without paying. When the worker tried to swipe the card, the machine declined it several times.
The worker alleged that the man then got into his car and left without paying the $60.03 for 15 gallons of regular gas. The man had given the worker a name and address in New Rochelle. The debit card he tried to use had the same last name on it as the one he gave to the worker.
Police ran a check and tried to contact the man but could not get in touch with him. At approximately 9 p.m., police went to the address and told the man that they would arrest him if he did not pay the money he owed by Monday morning.
The man arrived at police headquarters on Fifth Avenue at approximately 9:45 p.m. with a receipt for the amount owed, which indicated that he paid the gas station.
